Remarks

• large pectinid (100-120 mm) with flat valves and only internal ribs (37-52) on both valves
• colour of the left (upper) valve is red to deep red, usually with some brown near the umbone
• Amusium pleuronectes (Linnaeus, 1758) is smaller in size (60-90 mm) and has less internal ribs (24-35)
• sometimes confused with Ylistrum balloti (Bernardi, 1861) but the internal colouration is different:
  

  	Ylistrum balloti colouration inside is white colouration of the left (upper) valve is brown with a lot of black spots
  	Ylistrum japonicum japonicum colouration inside is white with a yellowbrown margin colouration of the left (upper) valve is red to deep red



• the subspecies from Taiwan, Ylistrum japonicum taiwanicum (Habe, 1992) is usually light brown coloured compared to the deep red colour of Y. japonicum japonicum
